Did you know...

...that the computer industry like many others is filled with what some would consider jargon? Jargon is really nothing more than specialized terminology used to assure that interested parties all speak the same language. This glossary defines many of the terms used on our site.

In the interest of fostering a totally user-friendly experience, we have provided the following definitions for terms that may be unfamiliar that are found scattered throughout our Web site.

Database

A database can be considered an electronic filing system. A database is a collection of related information that is stored together to allow for more efficient retrieval.

Internet

The Internet is a network of computer networks that spans the planet. Not to be confused with the World Wide Web.

Hardware

Hardware is the physical devices that make up computer systems and networks.

Query

Queries are filters used to extract useful, relevant information from a database.

Server

A server is a computer designed to run continuously. This allows data retrieval to occur at any time. Servers are normally built using more heavy-duty parts than ordinary computers.

User Interface (UI)

A User Interface, also abbreviated UI, is the onscreen portion of a computer program that the user interacts with to control what the program does.

World Wide Web

This is the "www" of an Internet address. Often referred to as simply the "Web", it consists of the rules for sending and receiving information over the Internet. This should not be confused with the Internet.

Web site

A Web site is a collection of linked documents called Web pages usually on a related subject that is accessable over the Internet using the rules of the World Wide Web.
